Understanding Success Rates

What does it mean if you are told that a program has a 40% pregnancy rate?

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) publishes IVF success rates in a standardized format which is available on-line at http://www.cdc.gov/ART/index.htm. All clinics who are members of The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) annually report their outcomes data to SART which then submits this data to the CDC.

Midwest Center for Reproductive Health The CDC report is comprehensive and provides valuable information about a program including: number of cycles performed, pregnancy rates by age, etc. An analysis of this data can be helpful in evaluating a program. While we at MCRH are very proud of our success rates, we caution patients in selecting a center, solely on the basis of the program’s IVF success rates.

The CDC itself states that “A comparison of clinic success rates may not be meaningful because patient medical characteristics and treatment approaches vary from clinic to clinic”. Numerous factors affect success rates, including the types of patients clinics are willing to treat, cancellation rates and the number of embryos transferred. Rates will also vary based on the age of the patients treated and their general health, as well as their diagnoses.

Additionally, since so many patients are able to conceive without the need for in vitro fertilization, there are many other factors to consider when selecting a program.
